Time to reflect...
PYP 5 students have started to reflect about their school year so far. It's a time to celebrate achievements and efforts, reflect about attitudes and skills and identify areas for improvement. Parents will receive an invitation to set up a time with the class teacher for the student-led conference and students will lead the whole meeting. They will explain, present, discuss and reflect with parents while showing them how much they've learned throughout the year.
The student-led conference is a good opportunity for students to think, plan and put into practice their idea on how best they can celebrate their school achievements with their parents, which is basically what our current unit of inquiry is about.
In this Unit students have already experienced how hard it is to put together an event in school. They also tried to plan ahead and discuss different ways to organise something involving other students in school and share their plans with the class. Now, it's time to go through the whole process and lead their own meeting, according to their own ideas, following their own plans. It's hard work! You can do it PYP 5!

Bake sale!
Last Friday was PYP 5 bake sale!
Students were very excited to organize their items and sell them to the school community. There were many different choices and they were all delicious! It was a good opportunity for students to put into practice the knowledge and skills developed in the previous unit of inquiry. Students were not only responsible for the food, but also to decide on the prices of items and sell them, adding prices and working out change. It was a very successful event! Well done PYP 5!
And a special thank you for parents for their continued support!
Last week was also the introduction to our new unit, Careful thinking and planning can help us express ideas, and students were given some time in the day to try to organize a school event. Any school event! There were some good ideas: a sleep over in school, a football competition, a sing and dance show, a master chef... and everyone really tried to make it happen. They spoke to Marcelo in the kitchen for ingredients and pans, to Mrs. Caselli in the office to invite parents and have the space available, to the PE dept. for balls and medals...
But it was not possible. Why?
It was a great way to start the unit and have everyone involved! Why?

Book Week and the beginning of a new Unit!
Last week was Book Week!
It was a very busy week full of excitement and adventures!
Suppa: Students had the opportunity to meet a book author, talk to her, and ask questions.
Book store: Classes had some time to look at books from a book store and select some of their interest to buy. Parents could then send the money to buy them or come with their children to see them together.
Door decoration: Every classroom decorated their doors under the theme 'Adventures'. Parents can check them out at drop off or pick up time.
Reading guests: Class representatives organised a schedule for parents to come to school and read a book to the class. It was a great opportunity for students to listen to books being read by someone other than their teachers. Thank you very much!
Rotation: Student had one lesson a day to go to another class and have an activity related to Book Week taught by another teacher.
Character parade: Friday was the day of the Book Character Parade! Students could come to school dressed as a book character and show their costume to the community in the parade!
Buddy reading: PYP 5 students had the opportunity to get together with another year group and read share reading.
Bookmark competition: Students could take part in a competition run by the library: to design a bookmark! There were lots of creative ideas!
Spelling Bee: Students could also take part in a lunch time spelling bee to show their spelling skills and win points to their houses!

Apart from all book week related events in school, PYP 5 also had their Super Challenge last week. It was their opportunity to show their understanding of the Unit. The challenge was to organise a healthy picnic for the class. Students had to work in small groups, make a shopping list, select items in the supermarket, compare prices, and make choices to keep to a budget: R$30,00.
They went to a supermarket and had lots of fun while working together on their set purpose. It was a great trip and a good closure to our Unit!
