Words from the other side of the world!

This week our students received letters from the other side of the world! St. Francis College and  Mount Scopus Memorial College in Australia started a little Pen Pal project last term and our students wrote them a letter, when they were still in PYP 4. Students from the other school answered those messages and now we got some news from our new friends! It's been an exciting first month to PYP 5, making friends near and far! (See pictures below)

Now it's our turn! We will organise information and work with letter structure to write to them once more!

Back in our school routine, students are using some time in class to discuss and record their understanding of children and human rights. (See pictures below)

Also, students are taking part in many different games and activities to experience and discuss the meaning of fairness. Does fairness mean that everyone gets the same? Is equal always fair?  (see pictures below)

We carried out an activity where children were offered popcorn and allowed to take as much  as they wished. Children were called in alphabetical order, but to their surprise when we  reached half way through there was not enough for everyone.  Problem solving skills were  put into practice to sort out this issue and children were also encouraged to reflect about how they felt.  This was a way for children to think about how resources are unequally shared  and  propose possible solutions. They understood that although it is a child's right to have all they need in order to survive, this does not always happen around the world. (See pictures below)

Have a great week!

Another busy week!

Last week PYP 5 Sigma had an unusual object with them. One of our students, João Pedro in PYP 5 Sigma, brought a real Olympic torch to share. His father had the honour of being the bearer of the torch on Paulista Avenue and students found out that the bearer keeps the torch and the actual fire is passed from one person to another until it reaches the Olympic Stadium. (See pictures below)
The school also has put up a board for the Olympics and students could also share their experiences of the Olympics by displaying pictures of themselves in Olympic Games they have been to.

In class, students experienced a gallery walk activity followed by the see, think, wonder thinking routine. In this activity, students carefully observed photos of humans whose rights were not being met. (See pictures below)

They are learning and practicing how to read on their own,
building stamina and getting more engaged using the Read-to-Self routine. (See pictures below)

They looked at children's right, discussed them, and are planning to create their own Book of Children's Rights. (See pictures below)

Overall, PYP 5 students are getting used to the routines in school and in the classrooms. They wrote essential agreements for their individual classrooms to ensure each one of them can give of their best.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Please remember that payments for Peraltas trip can only be done on Monday and Tuesday (Jd. Europa) or Wednesday and Thursday (Pinheiros). Parents can come and sort it out with the Peraltas staff or send the payment via the diary.
  • Please ensure your child brings to school a little pouch or necessaire and a cap for the tooth brush for them to keep it clean and organized when brushing teeth.
  • Students are now getting their recorders and already gave their first blow to it in music lessons! If your child does not have a recorder yet, talk to the class teacher.

Have a great week!
