Engaging into the Unit

PYP 5 students started the first unit of inquiry experiencing what it feels like not to have their rights met and not to be treated fairly.

The teachers told students that they were no longer allowed to ask questions, to express their ideas, and to play during recess. Besides that, students were segregated according to their physical characteristics (only blonde students could play, students with their hair tied back could draw, etc..)

There were many students upset when they were not treated fairly and the ones who had "privileges" felt uncomfortable and sympathized with their friends.

That was a provocation activity to get students engaged and thinking about the unit's central idea:

Creating and protecting human rights is a shared responsibility.

Students also had the opportunity to identify and discuss the difference between wants and needs. They understood that a need is a right that must be protected. (see pictures below)

Some groups have already started to decorate their cereal boxes to have a personalize book holder. Each student will have their own book box for their daily 5 routine.

And last week the whole primary school got together to support Bia Bulcão, an ex-student from St. Francis College who was playing Fencing in the Olympics, foil modality.

Have a nice week!
